We are announcing the creation of two new ladder competitions, open to all St Chad’s Club members at all ability levels. The intent is to provide an opportunity for competitive, but fun play whilst other competitions and events are unavailable due to COVID-19 restrictions. For newer members, this is a great way to meet other players at the club.
We will be running one mixed singles ladder for both men and women, although we will recognise the top-placed men and women separately. Likewise, we will run one combined doubles ladder for any pairing (mixed, men’s or ladies’), to ensure there are sufficient teams.
The ladders work by ranking players/teams in a table. You can then challenge players above you to a match. If you win, you will take your opponent’s place and your opponent will drop down one position. If you lose, you both remain where you are. Players should reach a level in the ladder where they can play against opponents of a similar ability. The ladder rewards both winning and regular play. Players are free to choose how often they want to play (but see the rules below). The ladders start on Friday 10th July and run until Sunday 20th Sept 2020 (inclusive). The top two men and top two women from the singles ladder will then be given the chance to play off for the respective club titles (including the Karen Wignall trophy for the ladies). If weather, regulations and player availability allow, we plan to hold these matches as a grand final on Sunday 27th Sept., possibly alongside an American mixed event. More details will follow nearer the time.
You can sign up to play on the ladders by self-registering with TennisRungs at https://app.tennisrungs.com/Public/Register/80451371 .To register you will need a Join Code, which is the same as the number of the court padlock. If you don’t know this combination, you need to send a mail to Anne Wallace confirming that you accept the COVID-19 playing restrictions. During registration you will be asked to provide an email address, which will be shared with other players to arrange matches. If you choose to add a phone number, this will also be shared.
Once registered you can click on Join Ladder to join either the singles or doubles ladder (or both). You can then challenge other players (from this Friday) and report match scores. There are also apps available: follow the download links provided.
Initial placement is in order of registration. If you prefer to be placed lower on a ladder, please contact me and I will drop you down a few places. You can leave or join a ladder at any time. New players will join at the bottom. If you wish to play doubles but do not have a partner, please contact Penny Rice, who may be able to help.
The basic rules for our ladders are:- 3 set matches. The 3rd set to be played as just a champion’s tie break (first to 10 points with 2 point difference) [*].- You can only challenge one other player/team at a time.- You can challenge up to 3 places above (or any below, if you want).- The winner takes the loser’s place. The loser moves down a position.- Players will lose 5 places if they don’t play for 21 days.- Players are expected to respond to challenges in a timely fashion.[*] Alternative match lengths may be played by prior agreement of both players/teams.
